Our very own Grayton Beach was recently honored with an award that goes back 30 years. For the second time since the creation of the award, Grayton Beach was named the Number One Beach in America, by Stephen “Dr. Beach” Leatherman. Leatherman is a coastal scientist and professor at Florida International University, who ranked Grayton Beach Number One another time, in 1994.
Leatherman ranks beaches based on 50 categories of criteria, including beach material, sand temperature, beach wind, and water color.
“It’s some of the finest white sand in the world. The first time I saw it I felt like I had to put on sunglasses it was so bright. Some people thought it was snow. I said, ‘No that’s not snow!’” Leatherman told the Northwest Florida Daily News. “The sand is the highest quality in the world. It’s pure quartz crystal.”
In addition to the sand, Grayton Beach is known for its crystal clear emerald water, fresh water ponds, and white sand dunes, unique to Florida’s 1,350 mile coastline. And as of May 20th, 2020 Summer visitors to South Walton will once again be able to enjoy free day-use admission to Grayton Beach State Park and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park from Memorial Day through Labor Day. You’ll be able to witness this beautiful marvel for yourself all Summer long!
The free day-use admission is available to visitors during normal operating hours, generally 8 a.m. to sunset. The official kick-off of the event was Memorial Day weekend, and free day-use admission extends through Labor Day.
